Is a Reuben Corned Beef or Pastrami

  • #1
I don't have a general preference, but I was at Saul's in Berkeley today with my girlfriend and we decided to do an experiment. We both ordered a reuben, hers with pastrami and mine with corned beef. We both agreed that the corned beef was superior, but I've always thought Saul's pastrami was kind of dry, so I wasn't surprised with the result.

What's your preference?

Another vote for corned beef.

A reuben sandwich made with pastrami is just a pastrami sandwich with sauerkraut.

Reubens are only made with corned beef. The rest called "turkey" Reuben, "pastrami" Reuben, etc.

A rueben is made with corn beef.

Pastrami is nice but it's like making a hamburger but use pastrami instead thus it's not a true hamburger.

When you use pastrami it is no longer a reuben but instead a rachel.

Is corned beef that good? I always associated it with cheap food.

heh, I didn't even read your post.

if you want good Pastrami, you need to drive down to San Carlos and get some Pastrami at The Refuge. It is the best in the world, hands down.

Both are good, IMO, but Pastrami just makes it tastier.

If prepared properly, it's incredible. I believe to corn beef you put it in a tub of vinegar and spices for over a week at room temperature.

Yeah, I've been there. I'm not a fan of having the pastrami cut so thickly; they're more like chunks rather than slices. Anyway, there are a number of places in the LA area with better pastrami. That's the general problem with the Bay Area though is that there simply aren't enough Jews to sustain a deli culture.

I made Pastrami yesterday for a birthday get together today.

I took 2 lage peices of corned beef (brisket) and put a heavy coating of spice rub on it.
Then smoked it for 4 hours in a Weber Smoker, then wrapped it in foil for 2 more hours on the smoker, let it rest for an hour before unwrapping the meat, then after unwrapping, another 45 minutes before slicing.

Wa-La . . . perfectly delicious Pastrami made from corned beef.
